he onset of the pandemic inspired a turn inward, a re-assessment of our home, and an exploration of
how to maximize our existing footprint. The finished basement offers an extension of the living space.
The possibilities of a basement are endless: playroom, bar, game room, spa retreat, or gym. With its
ample square footage, a basement can serve multiple uses and purposes.
Basements, however, present a unique challenge. Often a multi-functional hub of the home, the subterranean space requires durability. Its location beneath ground level means
a basement is vulnerable to dampness and flooding.
Homeowners frequently default to choices like vinyl and manufactured wood, believing that these materials can withstand the potential damage associated with basement living. When put to the test, particularly with the recent
extreme weather, many homeowners discover that these options do not deliver on their promises. With its strong density and a surface impervious to water, porcelain tile
is an optimal choice for basement installation. Beyond
its material characteristics, the strict protocol for
installation deepens its resiliency.
While Artistic Tile’s specialty is
natural stone and intricate mosaics, Founder and Chairman Nancy
Epstein recognized the desirability
of porcelain tile for spaces like
basements early in the company’s development. Nancy carefully
curated and developed porcelain tile that can be paired with more luxe products in a way that is sensible,
yet still fresh and beautiful. In an
industry where porcelain products are mass produced at enormous scale, Nancy has carved out a niche - designing and sourcing unique,
artful porcelain tile that blends
naturally, lends utility, and enhances the higher traffic or more utilitarian spaces of our clientele.
Shagreen is marine leather – the skin of sharks and rays, with a pattern of tiny circles that has
inspired designers and artisans for centuries. Our Shagreen porcelain tile features this arresting
pattern, with the added distinction of a diamond repeat, creating a subtle tone-on-tone look of true sophistication and luxe appeal.

Kauri is a rare wood found only in New Zealand. Our Kauri porcelain takes inspiration from this treasured resource to create 8" x 48" porcelain planks. The range of color extends beyond grey and brown to include a brilliant white and a dazzling blue. Kauri Diagonal refracts the visual elements of the wood kaleidoscopically. Offered as 24" x 48" porcelain tile, Kauri Diagonal makes a memorable impression.
Inspired by the translucent glazes achieved by
master watercolorists, Aquarelle softly shimmers with washes of color. The 15 3/4" X 31 1/2" porcelain tile is available in three colorways: a sunlit Grey,
a rich Navy with hints of cobalt, and an evanescent blue-green Aqua.
