To make the laundry room feel extra special, Shelley chose one of our newest designs, Slide by Michelle Gerson. The customizable mosaic, made in house at Artistic Tile headquarters, features a twist on an oval in repetition. Shelley opted for a pastel colorway to echo the soft muted colors naturally found in the Hamptons, where the house is located.

The Slide by Michelle Gerson mosaic tile backsplash is paired with

Dolomiti Sunset marble on the countertop, illustrating that even in a high activity space like a laundry room, natural stone is still the best option for the countertop.

Slide by Michelle Gerson is a fully customizable pattern, made to order

in our Secaucus, NJ headquarters, available in an array of colors. For the 2024 Hamptons Holiday House, Shelley took the ability to customize Slide a step further by creating a diamond pattern at the center of the backsplash.

Traditionally, the design of the Slide mosaic is a linear grid repeat, but Shelley wanted to utilize the tile to create a focal point in the room. When sourcing options at the Artistic Tile Paramus showroom in the Paramus Design Center, she happened to run into Artistic Tile CEO Joshua Levinson. When the two discussed options for the show house, Shelley shared her wish to create something unexpected for her laundry room. Josh noted that as a fully custom design, made in house at our headquarters, it is very possible to meet a designer's specific vision.

A designer show house is a unique opportunity to allow a designer free rein

to design as they wish, without the requests of a client coming into play.

When designer Shelley Cekirge was asked to design a space for the Holiday House Hamptons 2024 Designer Showhouse,

she jumped at the opportunity, sharing,

“as a designer, I've wanted to work on a show house for a long time.”

Shelley’s room, the laundry room, provided the opportunity to create something special in a typically utilitarian space.

People think of a laundry room as just a functional space, but it really is a space that a lot of people spend a lot of time in. Why not make it a place that you enjoy being in?

For the space, the architecture calls for something that highlights the center of the room behind the cabinetry. Artistic Tile took the Slide mosaic and were able to cut it into the diamond-shaped pattern that looks really amazing in the room.

To create the custom backsplash, the reconfigured patterned was first rendered on the computer by Artistic Tile’s Senior Industrial Designer Kyle Gulliford. The diamond feature required flipping the pattern both horizontally and vertically. The multi-hued pastel colorway added an additional layer of complexity to maintain the pattern to create a perfect diamond. The drawing was then used to lead the waterjet machine, cutting each individual piece of the pattern from the stones selected: Dolomiti, Rosa Portogallo,

Lilac, Vanilla Onyx, Azul Cielo, and Ming Classico.

After the individual pieces were cut on the waterjet machine, each piece was placed into the pattern by hand and mesh mounted on individual sheets for ease of shipping and installation. To make sure the configuration was perfect prior to shipping, our team laid out the full pattern in the mosaic shop for review. Because of the natural variation of stone, individual pieces that may have not had enough color or pattern to maintain the integrity of the design were swapped out. We further streamlined the process by partially carpet cutting the design. By straight cutting the bottom of the pattern, the installer was able to work off a level line, expediting the install and ensuring accuracy. The ability to control the process in-house allows for every detail to be considered.

Showhouses present a unique opportunity to foster great design.

Collaborating with designer Shelley Cekirge on her laundry room design inspired a fresh new take on our Slide by Michelle Gerson mosaic tile backsplash. Shelley noted “that it was an organic process where we worked our way into this more elaborate design, which became really cool. And the end result, I think, speaks for itself.” This intricate design, brought to life through meticulous craftsmanship and the expertise of our in-house talents, showcases how even a high-activity space can be both functional and visually captivating.

Behind the Scenes

Transforming a Space into a Jewel Box of Stone

Designer Shelley Cekirge’s Vision for the Holiday House Hamptons 2024 Designer Showhouse

Fully Custom, Made In-House

I’ve worked a lot with Artistic Tile and something that I really love about them is how they really are able to bring my vision to life, whatever that may be. I was able to double bookmatch the backsplash to make this really cool, almost jewel box effect. It was something unique that I wouldn’t have been able to do with another company.
